Greek yogurt is one of those simple pleasures that brings sweetness and comfort at any time of day. Dense, rich, and velvety, it has become a staple in our refrigerators as a delicious and satisfying ally. But choosing the right one is key. The French consumer association UFC-Que Choisir has just reviewed around twenty non-organic Greek yogurts sold in supermarkets.
The quality differences are greater than they appear.
Contrary to what one might think, not all Greek yogurts are simply variations of the same recipe. UFC-Que Choisir has noted some surprising discrepancies: imprecise or foreign milk origin, very low fat content (and therefore a less creamy texture), questionable thickening methods, and above all... prices that skyrocket for no real reason.
Some jars cost up to twice as much as others, without any justification for the difference in composition or quality. You could therefore be paying more for a less authentic product. Not ideal when you're looking for a rich, enveloping texture and a well-rounded flavor, as traditional Greek methods dictate.
Best value for money according to UFC-Que Choisir
Surprisingly, it's the store brands that are coming out on top, according to UFC-Que Choisir. Intermarché, Leclerc, Carrefour, and Lidl offer Greek yogurt at very affordable prices, often less than €2 per kilo. Crucially, these products boast French milk origin and a rich texture that closely resembles what one expects from Greek yogurt.
The UFC-Que Choisir study also highlights large organic tubs, sometimes sold in quantities of up to 1 kg. Not only do they adhere more closely to the traditional recipe, but they also have a more reasonable environmental impact. Less packaging, more natural ingredients, and a texture that is often more appealing: a winning combination. In short, for a thick, flavorful yogurt at a reasonable price, it's best to look at store brands or large organic tubs. Great news for those who like to combine pleasure with affordability.
And what about plant-based alternatives?
Because Greek yogurt isn't just about dairy milk, the shelves are overflowing with excellent plant-based options. Coconut, soy, almond Greek yogurt: many versions offer a thick texture, a harmonious taste, and a truly satisfying mouthfeel.
These plant-based options don't aim to perfectly mimic the omnivorous version, but offer their own distinct, often very appealing, identity. They are suitable for vegetarians, vegans, those with lactose intolerance, or simply anyone who enjoys variety in their diet. There's something for everyone, and every palate can find something to enjoy. The important thing is to choose a product that you love and that respects your body.
The homemade trick for perfect Greek yogurt
Another option is homemade. UFC-Que Choisir suggests an ultra-simple method: take a regular plain yogurt and add a spoonful of heavy cream. Mix it together, let it chill for a bit, and you'll get a texture surprisingly close to store-bought Greek yogurt. This solution has several advantages: you choose your ingredients and adjust the richness to your liking.
Faced with such a wide range of options, taking the time to read the labels remains essential. The best option is often the simplest: a yogurt with few ingredients, a clear origin, a natural texture, and a reasonable price. Everyone has their own preference; the important thing is to choose a product that makes you feel good.
