Who is Sophie Adenot, 43, the future astronaut? Her impressive journey in a male-dominated field

Sophie Adenot embodies the vanguard of the new generation of French astronauts, advancing female representation in a field long dominated by men. This engineer by training and seasoned test pilot is preparing to join the International Space Station in the spring of 2026, propelled by an exemplary career marked by numerous achievements.

A path of excellence and pioneering

Born in 1982 in Cosne-Cours-sur-Loire, France, Sophie Adenot divided her studies between science and aviation. A graduate of the École Nationale Supérieure de l'Aéronautique et de l'Espace (ISAE-SUPAERO), she began her career in 2004 at Airbus Helicopters before joining the French Air Force in 2005 as a cadet officer. She quickly distinguished herself, accumulating over 3,000 flight hours on 22 different types of helicopters, and in 2018 became the first female helicopter test pilot in France. Her career path is reminiscent of that of Jacqueline Auriol, a pioneer of women in aviation in France.

A military career in the service of aeronautics and space

An experienced pilot, Sophie Adenot carries out operational rescue and VIP transport missions, holding command positions within Transport Squadron 60 at Villacoublay. In 2019, she joined test pilot training, where her skills were further honed at the Cazaux Flight Test Center. Her distinguished and respected military career has been marked by several awards, including the Aeronautics Medal and the ICARE Prize.

Towards space with the European Space Agency

In November 2022, Sophie Adenot was selected from over 22,000 applicants to join the European Space Agency's (ESA) 2022 astronaut class. After a year of intensive training at the European Astronaut Centre in Germany, she received her official astronaut certificate in April 2024. In May, she was chosen for a long-duration mission aboard the International Space Station, scheduled for spring 2026. She thus became the second French female astronaut after Claudie Haigneré, a symbol of renewal and continuity in French space exploration.

One small step against the patriarchy, one giant leap for Sophie Adenot?

Sophie Adenot is a leading figure in the fight against patriarchy in a sector that remains overwhelmingly male-dominated, such as aerospace. Her career illustrates women's ability to succeed in spheres historically dominated by men. Her success in the selection process demonstrates how much extra effort women often have to make to validate their competence in environments where they remain a minority. This dynamic illustrates the weight of patriarchal norms that still strongly shape scientific and technical careers.

Sophie Adenot also positions herself as an ambassador, aware of her inspiring role. She proudly champions diversity and the feminization of careers in the space sector. Her testimony underscores not only the need to make women visible in these environments, but also to dismantle gender-based prejudices, ageism, and stereotypical representation.

Ultimately, this is a symbolic turning point where space exploration also becomes a social conquest, in favor of real equality between women and men in scientific sectors.
