This fall, these 5 colors will brighten up your looks.

Black and brown won't be the only colors making a comeback in September. Data from the Fall/Winter 2026 fashion shows reveals five much bolder colors: plum, rust, bright red, yellow, and forest green.

According to the Tagwalk ranking reported by Femme Actuelle , plum and rust saw the most dramatic increase, with a 309% jump. Bright red gained 23%, yellow 19%, and forest green 13%. Back-to-school season 2026, therefore, doesn't replace classic autumnal shades; it simply adds many more possibilities.

Plum and rust are taking a significant lead.

Plum arrives with one advantage: it remains deep enough to easily evoke the clothes we usually associate with autumn, without resorting to all-black. At Balenciaga, Hermès, and Joseph, the color appears on dresses and other very different pieces.

It also works very well with colors already present in many wardrobes. Raw denim, gray, brown, or beige allow you to incorporate it without having to build an entire outfit around it. Conversely, those who like contrasts can pair it with red, which is also very trendy this season.

Rust plays a different role. Between burnt orange, terracotta, and warm brown, depending on the shade, it immediately evokes the colors of autumn. Tagwalk, however, places it on par with plum in the trends observed across the autumn-winter collections.

Max Mara notably used it in knitwear, Chanel in a tweed ensemble, and Saint Laurent in a much dressier version. Three very different interpretations that demonstrate above all that a trendy color does not dictate a single style .

Do you love comfy sweaters? Rust can easily replace brown. Prefer accessories? A bag or a scarf will do. There's no need to think of a head-to-toe look as the ultimate goal.

Bright red and yellow refuse to disappear with summer

The biggest surprise this fall might come from the colors we would normally associate with summer dresses. Bright red continues its reign after several seasons dominated by color blocking.

Bottega Veneta, Chanel and Chloé have notably incorporated it into their autumn-winter 2026 collections. It can take up all the space on a coat or dress, but can also remain much more discreet on a cardigan, shoes or a bag.

The same goes for yellow. After the ubiquitous butter yellow of recent months, the back-to-school collections are showcasing bolder shades. Mugler opted for lemon yellow, while Chloé and Tod's also featured it in their designs.

Vogue confirms this continued popularity of color; Prada, Chloé, Celine, Loewe, and Saint Laurent have all contributed to the return of yellow to the autumn wardrobe. The traditional abrupt shift from summer colors to an entirely dark wardrobe is therefore becoming much less obvious.

And above all, there's no need to bring back the old rule that certain colors are forbidden because of your age, your hair or your complexion.

A color doesn't become too bright just because you're 50 or 70 years old.

If a particular shade of red makes you want to wear it, the question can end there. No color chart needs to decide for you whether you have "the right complexion."

Forest green allows you to start much more gently

The fifth color offers an ideal entry point for those who prefer less vibrant hues. Forest green remains deep, easy to coordinate, and close enough to traditional autumnal palettes to avoid giving the impression of a complete style change.

Louis Vuitton, Valentino, and Jean Paul Gaultier have all used it in very different styles. Satin, velvet, and structured dresses demonstrate that color also changes dramatically depending on the fabric on which it appears.

In everyday wardrobes, the possibilities are much simpler. A forest green jacket with jeans, a knit top with black trousers, or a skirt worn with a white shirt are more than enough. The five back-to-school trends can be approached in exactly this way: adding a color to what already works rather than replacing your entire wardrobe.

This is probably the most interesting part of this colorful wave.

Trends can inspire without becoming a rule. You don't have to wear all five shades, or even like any of them. Your old black sweater doesn't suddenly become unfashionable just because plum has jumped on the Tagwalk charts.

But if your wardrobe is starting to feel a little too tame, September offers some easy ideas to try. A rust-colored scarf, a yellow sweater, a forest green jacket, or a red bag can be enough to change the look of clothes you've been wearing for several seasons.

Color doesn't need to correct your figure, make you look younger, or make you thinner. It can simply be there because you like it. And that's already a great reason to wear it.
